A flashlight is an essential item in any survival kit. Currently I have two flashlights: I carry a Surefire 6P LED light that is probably one of the most durable flashlights available. It provides a super bright 80 lumens and will run for 11 hours on one set of batteries. As a back up, I also have a Duracell crank led flashlight with radio. because it’s a crank flashlight, I never have to worry about batteries going dead. Plus, the Duracell light also can charge my cellphone. I also keep a few glow sticks and a colapsible candle in its holder in my pack as well.

Teetering toward homelessness, these are the people stretching their money as far as possible and living paycheck-to-paycheck. With news of layoffs, budget cuts and home foreclosures hitting closer to home each and every day, the homeless and working poor are running out of options in their struggle for survival. So where do they turn?

Last year, more than $8.6 million in direct aid went to needy families and individuals for rent and utility assistance, preventing many of them from becoming homeless. With 51,525 home visits and 340,274 Survival Kit boxes distributed, the conferences of St. Vincent de Paul are changing lives every day. Its members are touched in ways they never thought possible by those they serve. Often, the Vincentian volunteers are moved to respond to the needs they see in unexpected ways.

For homeowners interested in energy-conserving appliances, you might consider the tankless water heater model. Tank-less hot water heaters work differently that conventional heaters. Rather than keeping a large amount of water heated in case you may need it, they only heat water when it is triggered by you needing hot water. This saves money by not heating water pointlessly.

Of course, staying in your home and waiting for the storm to pass might not be an option if the government decides to issue evacuation orders. It is critical that you always comply with these proclamations and do not attempt to ride out the storm on your own. Make a list of relatives and friends who live a few hours away that you could potentially stay with under these circumstances. Leaving your home will be much more stressful if you do not have a destination planned out. If everyone you might stay with is in the affected area, then you might have to go to whatever facilities the government has set up to take shelter. Get your emergency food storage here.
