That might be changing. No, I’m not putting solar on my roof. Too expensive. I’ve done the standard home efficiency upgrades — insulation, windows, doors, new 95 percent efficient furnace. But that’s another story.
So some people have chosen to get off the grid. Generally, there are three basic ways to create your own power – solar power, wind power and hydro power.
Build your own solar panels, and create a power source and a method of generating you own energy needs. Some things that you will want to consider before building are the following. How are the solar panels going to be used? To supply all the energy needs of your home, or just as a partial offset from utility power? How much power you wish to generate will determine the size of the panels. If your solar panel frame is being built out of wood, you will need to have the following tools to build your own solar panels.
Having your own home business offering something people need and want will prepare you for a possible loss of employment. The unemployment rate is going to go way up. In some European countries there is now 30 and 40% unemployment. In the U.S. 9% unemployment is already causing a lot of pain and discomfort for a lot of people. Imagine 40% unemployment. Do not think because it has not happened in your life time that it cannot happen.
Compared to other energy platforms, hydropower is very efficient. Energy conversion rates are in the 80 to 90 percent range. The plants also have a long life as you can see with any dam, and maintenance costs are relatively low. Cost of energy production, thus, is lower or on par with other energy platforms including oil.
Your electricity produces a “carbon footprint” depending on the mix of fuels used for power generation. Your home carbon footprint depends on how many kilowatt-hours (kWhs) of that electricity you use at home.
The last bit of encouragement I have for people interested in how to make wind power has to do with the two biggest reasons people are interested in this path: savings and the environment. When a person becomes more energy self sufficient, they no longer require so much energy from their electric company. The bills decrease and the expendable income increases. You will have more money for things you need! In addition, it is clean energy. Clean energy equals a cleaner environment. These are reasons to seriously consider wind power.
